Fergie & Laddie (Keith Austen)

Posted by Janet on October 26, 2010 at 5:03 PM

My Fergie tractor's just arrived

All shiny bright and new

The brochure that came with it claims

There's not much it can't do.

It's got a power takeoff

That runs implements galore

These handy clever gadgets

Will perform chore after chore.

I haven't got the whole range yet

I'll save for them of course

I love my modern tractor

But I'm bound to miss my horse.

The tractor doesn't nuzzle me

Or whinney out, "Hello".

I have no need to speak to it

And say "Get up" or "Whoo".

I used to chat to Laddie

As I drove him in the dray

He'd nod as if he quite agreed

With all I had to say.

But Sir Edmund used a Fergie

It helped him to reach his goal

It travelled those Antarctic wastes

And took him to the Pole.

My Fergie's got great qualities

Which Laddie can't surpass

As so it's with great sadness

I'll put him out to grass.
